My birthday weekend was lovely.
Yesterday was my "the day" which started with my family descending on my room at 7.30 in the morning for the first round of presents. I was lucky enough to receive a custom fit driver from Mum and Dad, which I knew about because I had to get fitted for it and it has been living in my golf bag for a week or so.
The club head has a 19 degree loft and the shaft is a more flexible men's one. Apparently I hit a golf ball like a guy, I don't know enough about golf yet to know whether this is a good or bad thing. What I do know is that it means Mum's new driver is a prettier colour than mine because it has a ladies' shaft.
The present I got from my sister was also very exciting; tetris leggings! They are the best pair of leg wear I have ever owned. Katie actually ran into the guy who designs these leggings this week and he asked her to try on some products and give him feedback about what she likes and doesn't like about his clothes. Some people have all the luck!
My brother got me the Titlelist golf visor I've been eying off at the proshop for the past month. It is red with navy text.
After early morning presents Alex went off to cricket and I went off to pump class at the gym with Mum. After we got home I had breakfast (weetbix) and Patsy came over from her hotel. She gave me a golf buggy and a pair of silver earrings with red beads. I asked for a buggy from her (the sort you put your club bag on and wheel around, not a ride on cart). It is super light weight and means that I don't have to hire a heavy one at the club.
It was after Patsy had given me her gift that Katie received a text message and told me that I should go and check the front door. There was a big box waiting and a card waiting for me! I knew the handwriting straight away and was intrigued by what could possibly be in the box. I took it inside and lo and behold, a bouquet of cookies!
These were from my friend Leesa whom I have known for almost 7 years now, the entire time I've been in Melbourne, just about. Everyone needs a friend like Leesa; she's loyal, reliable and fantastic company. She's not phased by the ups and downs of life and is in a good mood the vast majority of the time. It is a special person who orders you a bouquet of cookies, liaises secretly with your sister and drops it off at your house to make sure you get the present "on the actual day". Thanks so much, Leesa, I'm so lucky to call you my friend.
I called Leesa to thank her, then Mum, Patsy and Dad all set off on shopping trips to gather supplies for the barbecue I had today. My sister and I went for a run. It was 5.4kms and I think that's probably the biggest continuous run I've ever completed.
"Jogged" would probably be the more accurate term, but still, faster than walking and no stopping. Traditionally I've hated running. I'm predominantly fast twitch muscle fibres, thanks to the platform diver mother, so running is not a form of exercise my body handles comfortably. However, I have been working hard and consistently on my fitness and my capacity to run has improved hugely. I was pretty proud of myself when I made it back to home.
After Katie and I had ran we came home and had a late lunch with the shopping brigade. After lunch Patsy headed back to her hotel for a rest and to get ready for dinner. At this time the BG clan minus Katie headed to the driving range to hit a bucket of balls each so that I could break in my fancy schmancy new club. It was fantastic.
My aunt Ali had arrived by the time we got home and she have me a gorgeous red leather bag. It could function as a large handbag or a satchel which has a pocket that will fit a netbook in it. She also gave me the gift from my other Adelaide based aunt and uncle, a pair of very pretty silver hoops. We then all proceeded to get scrubbed up for dinner.
Dad and I had organised for my dinner to be held at the lovely little Italian restaurant, Via Fratelli, which is just around the corner from home. They have a great menu which catered to all our weird and wonderful dietary requirements and have carpeted floor, so it wasn't too noisy for the oldies. My immediate family, my three living grandparents, Aunt Ali and two of Dad's brothers; Peter and Andrew made up our little party.
It was a really enjoyable night. The food was great and everyone seemed happy. My uncle Peter, who is my Godfather, gave me a beautiful Georg Jensen silver jewelery holder. It is a really stunning piece of art, really, and looks a bit like a giant, very stylish silver clam shell to put treasures in.
It was a great day. It was one of the best birthdays I've had for a really long time. I'm so grateful for the beautiful gifts I've received and the South Australians who trekked across the border to spend the day with me. Most of all, I'm grateful for my parents and my siblings, the people who know me best and love me most.
